 Thriller Mood Board 

Bullet train 

Mise-en-scene 


Lighting 

  • Artificial due to it being based at night time for 3/4 of the movie
  • Light becomes more brighter as the sun comes in during the last part of the movie 

Locations

  • Urban
  • It is based in Japan and the entire movie is on happening on a train.

Costumes 

  • The customers have a variety: 
  1. Most people in a suit which shows the richness of people.
  2. Some characters have casual clothing: which shows the standard of them being working or middle class.

Era 

  • The movie is set in the present day. 

Performance 

  • This is a comedy-action-thriller which is taken seriously but also has elements of laughter. 

Props 

  • The blood which looked realistic
  • The weapons in the film 
  • The train itself looking really nice and then gets destroyed in the last portion of the movie.


Camera

Shot types.

  • There are a variety of both close ups and long shorts. This is to show fight scenes or shows the audience what the protagonist and antagonists are doing. 
  • It makes the characters more mysterious and the audience learns the character development due to the camera shots.

Camera Angles

  • In the trailer and film the use of the low angles demonstrate a fighting scene is about to commence.
  • There are a lot of camera angles that are used in the film such as:
    • Long angles 
    • Short angles
    • Side angles 
  • The camera itself makes the audience believe they are in the film itself which makes the movie more attracting. 

Camera movement 

  • The camera movement in the film is quite frequent as a lot is happening in the film. 
  • Although there are a lot of things happening in the film, there are moments that are still which makes the audience and character stop and think.
  • The thriller itself is a comedy-action subgenre which illustrates the movement of the camera and why it is so significant. 

Editing

Pace

  • In terms of bullet train we can see that the pace in the movie starts slow but drastically goes faster and faster. As the pace of the film continue to get faster and faster, the audience feel a sense of
    them on the edge of their seats. 

Techniques 

  • Flashbacks which shows more of the character development but also contains tension as to why some characters may want to kill each other.
  • There is an opening scene to the film which shows majority of characters of the film which can make the audience think about what their role is and how they are going to be presented. 

Transitions 

  • There wasn't as much fancy transitions to the film however the number of transitions in the film was a lot. The transitions was a simple cut into the characters past. This was a good idea as audiences are kept engaged into the film. 

Sound 

Sound effects 

  • Most of the sound effects were diegetic. This allows the audience and the characters know what was happening in the film.
  • However during the character's past we got non-diegetic sound that was presented. This was the music in the background to keep the audience intrigued with what was happening in the film. 
  • There was sounds everywhere in the movie such as:
    • The train braking and crashing 
    • The fight scenes of the bottles, snake attacking, the sword and so much more.
  • At times of the film the music was quiet and nothing much was happening but that only created suspense for the audiences. 

Music


  • High pitched sound was used to show the pain the characters had.
  • Some of the fighting scenes had the music which was low base sounds.
  • There were even more music that was presented when a new character entered the train. 

Dialogue 

  • The characters had funny moments in there dialogue which made audiences laugh. 
  • The characters had unique dialogues compared to other characters in the movie. 

Voice overs

  • There wasn't voice overs much in the film. There were only a few that occurred. However they did add to the enigma of the film. 

Ex-Machina

Lighting 

  • Often throughout the film the lighting in the film is quite bright. However as the film progresses we can see it starts to become darker and darker. This makes the overall film better as it starts to make the audience feel eager about what is going to happen next. 
  • There is also artificial lighting in this film. An example of this is when the house goes into lockdown mode. This leads to red alarms starting to glare and therefore provides a source of artificial lighting. 

Locations

  • The location of Ex-Machina starts of to be in an urban environment. However during most of the  duration of the film it is based in the rural area in a tropical rainforest. This is because the whole plot of the film is to assess a robot. If the robot turns evil, this therefore leads to robot being lost and not being able to go into the human race. 

Costumes 


  • In the film the protagonists and antagonists style of costumes are very different from each other. The antagonists costume is very simple, they have a set of joggers and t-shirt. This is a bit unorthodox as the antagonist is a billionaire. However with the protagonist his outfit is different. This shows that both of the characters are different from each other and have different status in human society. 

Era 

  •  The time the film was set can be debateable. Some may argue that the film was set in todays time. This is because everything is simple and modern. However the other side of people may disagree and believe it is somewhat 10 years into the future. Ex-Machina was set in todays time due to the technology we have today. 

Performance 

  •  This film was mainly delivered more seriously. This is because this entire film is based on the assessment of a robot. There is a bit of silence during the ending of the film, this is because the audience will need to see what is happening. 

Props 

  • The props in the film are realistic. This makes the overall standard of the film more believable as we can see that everything looks more life-like. 

Camera

  • The film provides a variety of close ups and establishing shots of the secret house. This makes the audience learn more about each character and finds out how they develop and evolve in the film. 
Camera Angles

  • There are a variety of low and high angles in the film which helps with action scenes. This makes the elements of suspense build as the audience is keen on what is going to happen next in the film, 

Camera movement 

  • The camera movement in the film is quite rapid and frequent. This leads to more of erected movements in the film and explains why this film is thriller. 

Editing

Pace

  • During the start and middle of the film we can see that the pace of the film is quite slow as the audience starts to learn more about the characters and see what they are like. However during ending of the middle and the rest of the time in the film, the pace increases and becomes more rapid. This means that the audience wont get bored of the film and are rather more intrigued about what is going to happen next. 

Techniques 

  • In the film there are variety of techniques that are used. This is because the film is made to be exciting and contains elements of thrills to attract the audience. 

Transitions 

  • There wasn't many transitions that was used in the film as it kept moving on and developing. However during the last few minutes of the film there was a transition of the robot looking upon and living upon real life. 

Sound 

Sound effects 

  • The film had many sound effects in the film which was mainly diegetic. This was shown across the film as the sounds of alarms, the sounds of the city and many more was heard by the characters and audiences. 

Music

  • The music in the film was quite pleasant and was modern. These too were diegetic. However during the ending of the film the music was non-diegetic as only the audience could hear the music.  

Dialogue 

  • The dialogue in the film was somewhat unique as some of the audience may not understand the terms that was used to describe the robot. 

Voice overs

  • There was no voice overs in the film.
