Response to the client brief

 Explanation of demographics:

The target audience would be ages 16 - 24 years. Three key elements that we would include are swearing, violence and suspense. An advantage of picking an age group of 16 - 24 years old is, we are allowed to use as much violence and visual images to engage this specific audience for the movie trailer we are going to create. Another advantage to making the movie trailer is that as we are the producers, we can understand the audience better. This means that it will allow us to make something that is more relatable to the target audience. A challenge that we may face is when approaching this audience is that it may be difficult to make them understand what we're trying to portray. This is due to the likes and dislikes of the audiences and will therefore not be attracting to everyone in that target audience. Another challenge that we are going to face when making this movie trailer is the weather This means that there would be some days we will not be able to film. This will therefore make the deadline of the project to possibly be delayed. Finally another challenge that we may face is editing. This is because we might have the correct software to edit the movie trailer.

Conventions:

The thriller conventions we will include into our work are enigma, plot twists and many different aspects which would be made up of sub-genres that would be created. One way the conventions will be met will be revealed near the end of the movie trailer to keep the audience on the edge. This will allow more excitement in the trailer and will draw more audiences to watch it.

Industry requirements:

The institutions our thriller film will be produced by is 21st century fox and Lionsgate. Some regulatory issues that we will consider and use when creating the movie trailer is ASA, Ofcom and BBFC. We will use these regulatory issues in the UK as a baseline for what we know what to include and which is not allowed in the UK. This will also allow us to see what we need to get permission from and who.  Some institutional information that the text must include is the age rating. This is because this will show the target audience of the film and also tell customers that if they are below the age of that certain age rating, they will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Medium:

The medium we would be working in is the film industry. The type of text we are producing within that medium is a trailer. The type of genre that would fit into the trailer the best is a thriller.

How does it engage the audience?

(enigmas, clues, techniques)

In Reservoir Dogs the producers made the film engaging and easy for audiences to get ”hooked” on. This is because it presents the main characters all in one go but shows their status in the film. This leaves clues in the film as the audience wants to find out more about each character.

In the Seven, it engages the audience in many ways. One way this is presented is the photos in the crime scenes. This creates elements of confusion for audiences as they want to find out what has happened. This leaves clues in the film which leads to the main enigmas in the film. Also this keeps audiences intrigued with what is going to happen next in the film.

Mystery
Romance

What are the key themes that is used in the trailer?

  • Fear - One theme is that clearly shown in the trailer is the theme of fear. This is because this film is based on having blindfolds on. This is show at the beginning of the trailer from video clip 0:00 to 0:13. • Fear - Fear is shown across the trailer and from watching this the audiences may feel scared as what is going to happen next. Audiences are getting more scared as they are watching the trailer as it progresses further and further. This is because there is more suspense and there are more questions that need to be answered. Fear is presented across the trailer as it continues to build as the trailer progresses.
  • Mystery - In the trailer there is a continuous sequence of mystery that is presented, which is shown in minute 2:01. This means that there are many enigmas that are being presented all at once. This means that there is more of an attraction to this trailer as it the directors are not scared of showing what this film is capable of.
  • Romance - Although this movie is a thriller and built upon mystery and fear there is elements of romance in this as well. This can attract more audiences as there are elements of romance which may change the way of the movie. There isn't much romance that is presented in the trailer however here we can see there is elements of romance that is connoted in the trailer.

Explain how you might explore that theme in your film.

  • Fear - In my film that I will be producing I will add the theme of fear. This is because it will attract more audiences and make them thrilled to watch it. This will also help them as audiences love to have different themes in a variety of films.
  • Mystery - In the planning stage of the movie, I will try and add mystery. However, I don't think I will be able to expand on this as much as the movie I will be creating will only last 5 minutes long. However, it will be something to consider when planning this project.
  • Romance - When making my film I will try and add a scene of romance. This is because it can gather a different audience which will just improve the performance and reviews of my movie.
